Lower School Donates Their Box Tops
The Lower School collected over 5000 box tops this year and received a check that our students donated to the MUSC Children’s Hospital. In the fall, the 4th graders presented four local organizations to the Lower School students that we could support with the money we raise through our collection, and the Children’s Hospital was chosen by our students. We raised $530.00 and proudly presented a check to Melissa Kubu from MUSC (during a Chapel in which our teachers were acolytes and song leaders!). She gladly accepted the check on the hospital's behalf and expressed her deep gratitude to our school for their continued support. Please save your Box Tops for our collection again next year!
Second Grade Showcase
Second graders proudly shared the work they created as a culmination of their year-long learning. At their showcase on Tuesday evening, they shared their display boards and their lego projects with parents and classmates. Their understanding of Charleston and how it compares to cities in their chosen countries was evident as they spoke about their work. Students enjoyed working cooperatively in groups during this project, and each group received recognition for aspects of their work that were exceptional.
Making Windmills
Third graders are designing windmill blades. They've been studying fossils, fossil fuels, and alternative sources of energy in science. After reading about wind farms, they set out to design their own windmill with the goal of creating blades that would lift the most marbles! It proved to be a much bigger challenge than they first believed.
Special Celebration
Lower School students surprised Mrs. Marshall with a special tribute in honor of her upcoming retirement. They created songs, poetry, and books with their grade levels and presented them to her during a Community Time gathering. We were happy to have her husband and children attend so that they could see how much we love her. While we are very sad to see Mrs. Marshall go, we are happy for her and for her family. We all wonder what Lower School life will be like without her.
Unity Picnic
All Lower School students and faculty enjoyed our Unity Picnic on a beautiful day! Our Virtues Committee members work hard throughout the year, but this event is quite special. Our students enjoy the fun celebration of picnicking with their friends and playing games on the field. None of this could be done without Margaret Walton, Sandra Cheves, and Dawn Robertson. We thank each other them, and we wish Mrs. Robertson well as she steps off the committee to become more involved with our Parents Guild. She has been an integral part of all that our committee has done from its inception. Our hope is that all of our students better appreciate virtuous behavior and continue to focus on being people of virtue and integrity.
Lower School’s First Quiz Bowl Challenge
On Thursday, a select group of fourth and fifth graders competed against Pinewood Prep in the inaugural Quiz Bowl Challenge. Throughout the day, students' knowledge was put to the test in written tests, toss up questions, and bonus rounds. Our students did an amazing job and enjoyed competing against other students. Please congratulate these students for their wonderful commitment to their team: Stacey Kang, Kevin Fan, Ashley Yoon, Freeman Martin, John Darden, Wilkes Cramer, Conolly Burgess, Walker Carswell, along with Eric Fenno, Lucas Hay, and Henry Lee. We also want to thank Mrs. DeVos and Ms. Spann for leading the way with this new endeavor.
Carolina in the Morning
Third grade students made us all proud this week as they presented Carolina in the Morning. The production is a wonderful culmination of their learning throughout the year. Our students shined on stage as they shared lots of interesting and important information about our state through song and dance. Their presentations of their South Carolina collections were equally impressive, all students demonstrating excellent understanding of what they researched. We appreciate all that they teachers did to facilitate the learning, allowing their students to understand deeply and present their knowledge with a real sense of competence. We also are grateful to all parents who supported their children with this project.
