Girls Leadership
We started the week on a high note with a Girls Leadership event on Saturday morning. About half of all of our Lower School girls participated in the culminating activity of the year. Tracy Lewis, an environmental engineer, was our special guest speaker. Mrs. Lewis spoke with our girls about her job as a Senior Project Manager with HDR Engineering, Inc. of the Carolinas focusing on water quality. She described her current projects and shared pictures of her work sites. After her presentation, the girls participated in a water purification activity experimenting with materials that are effective in removing impurities from dirty water. They also completed two problem solving activities using teamwork to arrive at the solutions. Our girls completed the morning by analyzing their experiences and relating habits of leadership to these experiences. We are grateful to Mrs. Clair and Mrs. Rice for organizing this fun and educational morning. Thank you to everyone who worked with them to make this a positive experience for all.
Friendship Concert
Our Treblemakers performed with the Savannah Children’s Preparatory Choir in a Friendship Concert at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Each group sang their own songs and then joined together to sing two selections. Each choir enjoyed listening to the other - often singing along to songs they have also performed. When the two choirs came together, everyone was impressed with the beautiful music they created, whether under the direction of our Todd Monsell or their directors, Roger Moss and Emmy Williams. We thank all parents who attended this late afternoon concert and Mr. Monsell for facilitating this experience for our children.
Shapes!
First graders are exploring the world of shapes! They are learning about plane and solid figures in a variety of fun ways: shape hunting in the classroom, building shapes with pattern blocks, geoboard activities on iPads, and interactive SmartBoard lessons. This is a review and follow-up to their geometry studies during Beyond the Books.
First Graders Celebrate The Filling of Their Gem Jar
Mrs. Wey’s first grade class enjoyed reaching their behavior goal of a full gem jar with a pajama day and a movie. They enjoyed popcorn and the movie Ramona and Beezus. We are proud of these students for their cooperative behaviors and the growth they have shown throughout their first year at Porter-Gaud.
A Celebration of Spanish!
This week our Lower School students have had fun breaking piñatas made in Mexico. They are celebrating a great year of Spanish study along with Cinco de Mayo. Cinco de Mayo is a day to celebrate Mexican culture and heritage. Students would agree that breaking the piñata is a great Mexican tradition!
Making Music with Hawk Hurst
Fifth graders worked with Hawk Hurst this week to create flutes from river cane. Hawk shared folk tales and guided students as they filed, sanded, and decorated their masterpieces. The musical instruments were created from all natural resources, and they will surely be enjoyed by the students for years to come. The Green was full of music as the students completed their works of art. The weather cooperated beautifully and allowed the students to fully enjoy this special moment in their final year as Lower School students.
Intramurals
After eight sessions of fun competition, Team #2 needed to win their final softball game to tie Team #1. They pulled it off! Thirty three fourth and fifth grade students participated this spring, and they enjoyed playing kickball, soccer, and softball. We look forward to our fourth graders joining us next year as 5th grade leaders during the fall intramural season, and we hope some of this year's fifth graders will come back to help supervise the program.
A Very Special Mothers Day Tea
Our first graders hosted their mothers for a very special Mothers Day celebration. The students shared their special thoughts about their mothers in a video presentation which made everyone laugh - and cry! The students were also excited to share the books and clay sculptures they created especially for their mothers. We wish all of our mothers a very happy Mother’s Day!
A Very Special Thank You from Our Faculty
The entire Lower School faculty has enjoyed the feasts provided during Teacher Appreciation week. We want to extend a big thank you to Dee Dee Barnes for organizing these treats all week and throughout the whole school year. The food has been delicious, and we thank all the parents who have helped in making us feel special.
